Home and office film is different from car tint
Most tint shops are built around cars. Building window film — often called architectural film — is a different product and a different job:
- Different films. Home and commercial films are made for large flat glass, rated by heat rejection and visible light, and many are nearly clear.
- Different glass. Double-pane, low-E, tempered and large storefront glass each need the right film so the film and glass work together.
- Different install. Big panes, tall windows and working around furniture, staff or customers take different tools and experience than a car door.
A shop that does great work on cars is not automatically the right fit for your living room or storefront. Ask how much of their work is homes and businesses.
8 questions to ask before you hire
- Do you specialize in home and commercial window film?
- Which film brand and product would you use — and why that one for my windows?
- What are the TSER and VLT? TSER is how much of the sun’s energy the film keeps out; VLT is how much light gets through. Compare these, not darkness.
- What warranties come with it? Ask about both the manufacturer’s film warranty and the installer’s labor warranty, and get them in writing.
- Will you come measure and give a written quote? A real quote is based on your actual glass, not a guess over the phone.
- Is this film right for my glass? A good installer checks double-pane and low-E glass and any window warranty rules before recommending film.
- Who does the install, and how long will it take? Most homes and small offices are done in a day.
- Can I see samples on my own windows? Seeing film on your glass, facing your view, is the best way to choose.
Red flags
- A price over the phone without anyone looking at your windows
- "Darker is cooler" sales talk with no heat-rejection numbers
- No written warranty, or vague answers about what it covers
- Promising mirrored tint will give privacy at night — it will not (see privacy film day and night)
- Pressure to decide on the spot
How to compare quotes fairly
| Compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Film brand and product | Two "solar films" can perform very differently |
| TSER and VLT | Heat cut and brightness, in numbers |
| Warranty (film + labor) | What happens if it bubbles or peels |
| Installed price per square foot | The only fair way to compare totals |
| Glass prep and cleanup | Should be included |
Typical installed prices in the Springfield area are about $5–$12 per square foot for solar film, $10–$18 for ceramic and $8–$15 for frosted privacy film. See home and commercial pricing guides.
How we do it
Shadow Ridge Tinting works on homes and businesses only — no cars. Every job starts with a free on-site visit: we look at your glass, show samples on your own windows, and give you a written quote that lists the film, its performance and the warranty. Every install comes with a 15-year manufacturer film warranty and a 10-year labor warranty, and if any install is not right, our Bubble-Free Guarantee means we redo it. We usually reply within 2 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose a window tinting company for my home?
Pick a company that specializes in home and commercial window film, comes out to measure, shows samples on your windows, and gives a written quote listing the film brand, TSER, VLT and warranty.
Is car window tint the same as home window film?
No. Home and commercial (architectural) films are different products made for large flat glass, and the install is a different job. Ask how much of a shop’s work is homes and businesses.
What should a window tinting quote include?
The film brand and product, its TSER and VLT, the manufacturer and labor warranty, the square footage, the installed price per square foot, and glass prep and cleanup.
What questions should I ask a window film installer?
Ask which film they would use and why, its heat rejection and light numbers, what the warranties cover, whether it suits your glass, who installs it and how long it takes.
